Alkali magmatism on Mars: an unexpected diversity

چکیده
Despite an apparent north/south topographic dichotomy that formed >4.0 Ga, the young Martian meteorites (<2.4 Ga) and first-order remote sensing observations revealed a surface of Mars is uniformly basaltic. This simplistic vision has been challenged by discovery brecciated meteorite additional spacecraft data all point to presence alkaline igneous rocks, thereby demonstrating unexpected diversity on Mars. In present paper, we review variety effusive rocks (basalts trachytes) recognized so far in southern hemisphere as observed from unique 4.47 Ga meteorite, well ground, orbital data. The complementary plutonic orthopyroxene-rich early discussed. We propose mantle-derived magmas at high extent melting rather low pressure either erupted forming lavas, or crystallized shallow crustal depths, fractionating orthopyroxene which sank bottom chamber residual Widespread fractionation processes could also be related heavy bombardment crust generating melt sheets ultimately differentiated. The Magmatism of Mars Inferred from Chemical Composition of Shergottites
Introduction: It is well known that shergottites have a large variation of rare earth elements (REEs) abundance patterns and isotopic compositions. Jones [1] and Borg and Draper [2] suggest that light REEs (LREEs)-enriched shergottites resulted from mixing of a LREEs-enriched component with their parental magma. The LREEsenriched component is thought to be either Martian crust [1] or a KREEP-li...
متن کاملRNA splicing: Unexpected spliceosome diversity
A novel form of spliceosome, containing the minor snRNPs U11 and U12, splices a class of pre-mRNA introns with non-consensus splice sites. This unexpected spliceosome diversity has interesting implications for the evolution and expression of eukaryotic genes.
متن کاملKisameet Glacial Clay: an Unexpected Source of Bacterial Diversity
Widespread antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens is providing the impetus to explore novel sources of antimicrobial agents. Recently, the potent antibacterial activity of certain clay minerals has stimulated scientific interest in these materials. One such example is Kisameet glacial clay (KC), an antibacterial clay from a deposit on the central coast of British Columbia, Canada. Howe...
متن کاملTwo billion years of magmatism recorded from a single Mars meteorite ejection site
The timing and nature of igneous activity recorded at a single Mars ejection site can be determined from the isotope analyses of Martian meteorites. Northwest Africa (NWA) 7635 has an Sm-Nd crystallization age of 2.403 ± 0.140 billion years, and isotope data indicate that it is derived from an incompatible trace element-depleted mantle source similar to that which produced a geochemically disti...
متن کاملNominally hydrous magmatism on the Moon.
For the past 40 years, the Moon has been described as nearly devoid of indigenous water; however, evidence for water both on the lunar surface and within the lunar interior have recently emerged, calling into question this long-standing lunar dogma. In the present study, hydroxyl (as well as fluoride and chloride) was analyzed by secondary ion mass spectrometry in apatite [Ca(5)(PO(4))(3)(F,Cl,...
